In the past Rancher's Choice has hosted many exciting seminars focusing on the very latest information in the industry. Dr. C. M. (Red) Williams spoke on "Strategies for the 21st Century". He explored topics such as retained ownership, producer alliances and branded beef programs. Red is an internationally known lecturer and consultant. Few others offer his unique blend of education, experience and just plain common sense. The consequences of carcass trait emphasis on the cowherd was examined by Dr. John McKinnon, Sask. Beef Industry Chair. The computer vision system (CVS) of grading, ultrasound on live cattle and new identification and traceback technologies were also explained. All of this is key to advancing value based information and marketing systems. With experience from cattle buyer to university professor, John presented a thought provoking perspective on the beef industry and its future. New technology and management strategies are great but must turn into money to survive in the real world. Dave Moss, General Manager of Cattle Operations for the 80,000 head Western Feedlots Ltd., outlined its innovative Value Based Marketing (VBM) program. Through strategic alliance with Cargill Foods, producers are rewarded for cattle that more accurately reflect final carcass quality.
